In her first single of 2021, Chicago-based singer/songwriter Mariah Colon’s “Feel the Same,” produced by Kenneth Clair and vocal arrangements by S-O-S, is a 70’s inspired upbeat R&B pop tune perfect for the summertime. The song follows her smooth-sounding 2020 EP “Roots by Propagation” and the atmospheric single “Nostalgia,” also released last year.
“Feel the Same” starts with a light guitar intro and immediately hits you with a disco-reminiscent beat and Colon’s gentle voice. In the catchy chorus, she sings “I don’t feel the same/feel the same/feel the same/Am I the one to blame?/one to blame?/one to blame?” about a lover she’s changing her mind about. Colon’s honest and vulnerable lyrics accompanied with her bright tone of singing and instrumentation creates an intimate space between her and the listener, in common with the rest of her discography.
